New Resident Evil Movie Shows the Zombie Genre Isn’t Dead

According to the latest reports within the movie world, a new Resident Evil title is coming out. Zach Cregger is doing the movie, and says he would love to bring something new to the adaptation. He has said he wants to adopt a more stripped-down approach, and also wants to avoid the twists and turns of the movies he has been known for. He’s openly said that his movie will not have any surprises at all, and that the whole thing is straightforward and refreshing for the franchise.

Cregger Aims to Recreate the Classic Resident Evil Format

Cregger wants to create the same format and atmosphere that the franchise is known for. Referencing the original games in an interview, he mentioned that they are very cinematic and have great pacing. Although this is something he wants to recreate, he isn’t planning on using any of the original characters or plots. He wants to make sure that the movie is a nice slow burn and that he embraces the structure that made the games so popular.

His approach makes perfect sense as well, especially when you look at the commercial success of the franchise.

Beyond games and movies, the franchise has diversified into books that continue to sell, as they expand the universe and provide an even more in-depth way for fans to experience the universe.

Although we don’t know a lot about the movie right now, we do know that the project is set before October 1998. We also know that it’s set amongst the events seen in Resident Evil 3, which sees the city destroyed by a missile. In the teaser, the city is not rubble, which could mean it’s set in the spring of 1998. This would mean that it’s set before Jill Valentine shows up and before Leon S. Kennedy.

Zombie Genre is Still Alive and Kicking

Zombie cinema might have disappeared for some time, but there’s been a recent resurgence, which makes the timing of the new Resident Evil movie just right. A key example would be 28 Years Later. Reviews praise this movie as being an evolution of the franchise, with a lot of thematic depth. Smaller-scale projects like We Bury The Dead lean into the survival theme of the apocalypse, as opposed to the spectacle.

Outside the movie world, zombie content is more prevalent than ever. Audio dramas like We’re Alive are survival stories that are made to immerse and engage viewers on levels different from movies. In music, zombie-themed bands like Send More Paramedics have also come back, with the band performing a mini tour, given the surge in interest right now. The zombie theme is also prevalent online.
